Navistar will recall 20,673 school buses because a problem with the vehicle’s heater hose could result in a burn injury for the driver.
The manufacturer is recalling 2011-2016 IC Bus CE school buses built between Nov. 3, 2009 and Feb. 26, 2015, and 2012-2015 IC Bus BE school buses manufactured from Aug. 2, 2010 to Sept. 15, 2014.
The affected vehicles are equipped with a formed heater hose (to the driver’s heater) that include a manual shut off. Over time, repeated heat and pressure cycles can wear down the hose and cause it to split. As a result, hot engine coolant can leak into the driver’s foot area and burn the driver.
“If hot, pressurized coolant suddenly spills into the operator’s foot area, there is an increased risk of a burn injury or a crash,” said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
No crashes or injuries related to this problem have been reported.
Navistar is also recalling 157 transit buses with the same issue.
The second recall includes 2011-2016 IC Bus CE transit buses produced from July 1, 2010 to Feb. 4, 2015, and one IC Bus BE transit bus manufactured on November 2, 2010.
Warning signs include hardness, cracks, blisters and splits found on heater and coolant hoses.
Both recalls are expected to begin January 6, 2017.
